Introduction to The Blog "Touchstone of Health"

Touchstone of Health

Touchstone definition: A standard or criterion by which something is judged or recognized: ’they tend to regard grammar as the touchstone of all language performance.’  The Oxford Dictionaries.

What is the touchstone of health for you?  Here are some candidates: Lack of pain, boundless energy, adequate strength.  Then how do you achieve it? Eating properly? Regular exercise? Sufficient rest and sleep?  Getting regular adjustments?

Seems to me that you need to define what your daily touchstones are. And they should be grounded in some semblance of good science. The purpose of this blog is to help you in your journey to health and vitality and to find those touchstones that you can rely on day in and day out. Some posts will be positive: these are the things you should do or consider. Some will be negative: if you are doing this beware!

My orientation as you know is from the chiropractic imperative: spinal health.  In yoga the spinal column is referred to as brahma danda (the yoga spine), which literally means 'the walking stick of God.'  The spinal column protects the vital central nervous system, sort of like the wiring diagram of the human body. “Kinks” in the wiring diagram interrupts proper flow of information to the muscles and joints but also to all internal organs.

Most patients come to a chiropractor because of pain. They generally don’t associate pain with problems in the nervous system, with “kinks in the wiring diagram” but that is in fact what is occurring. So getting adjustments involves, in part, mechanically moving bones but more importantly it involves restoring proper nerve flow to the muscles, joints and organs.

We will discuss in this blog spinal health from a global perspective, chiropractic adjustments and exercise but also proper nutrition as well as cautions about bad habits and questionable prescription drug use. I hope and trust you will find it useful.  Please share it with friends and family who may not have had an exposure to the “chiropractic imperative.”
